Dr Christopher H. Phillips

Chris is a chartered chemist, but with an unusual blend of expertise in two highly specialized industries in their own rights - namely Coatings and Environmental Protection.

Having graduated in 1984 from the University of Leeds (UK) in Chemistry, Chris has a Master's Degree in Physical Chemistry with Distinction based on research into early detection and warning systems for toxic gases in a working environment. He then gained his PhD in polymers whilst being seconded from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) to Nippon Paint Co, Ltd in Osaka. Here he carried out process development on polymeric materials for coatings with household and industrial uses.
After returning to the UK in 1993, Chris worked as a consultancy manager within the BHR Group Limited (UK), an innovative research and technology organization that specialized in technical solutions that help the chemical industry transform process economics. His consultancy helped unlock "profit in the process" whilst reducing environmental impact. Whilst at BHR Group, Chris worked closely with the European Commission as a Project Coordinator in their JOULE program that was aimed at reducing CO2 emissions by lowering energy-demand.

Continuing his interest in energy and the environment, in 2001, Chris joined Grandy Environmental (HK) Limited as Senior Project Manager - later rising to COO. The business areas in which he primarily worked were Green Building Management solutions including improvements in Energy-efficiency, Air Quality/Water Quality and environmentally-friendly waste disposal.
Then in 2004, Chris returned to coatings where he was involved in the marketing and sales of PTFE-based non-stick coatings for cookware. Whilst working within the industry he became increasingly alarmed by the health, safety and environmental issues surrounding not only the manufacture of the PTFE dispersions but also the process in which they are applied.

Having worked within the traditional non-stick coating industry, but with all his past experience in safety and the environment, Chris is uniquely placed to compare and contrast the benefits of Thermolon™ with the distinctly flawed PTFE coatings that are still in widespread use.
